Winter moon, endangered planet

It's still cold here in Paris, and the skies are pristine blue, different shades by day and night. Not a cloud in sight. But the pollution is so bad that the mayor has established alternate-day rules for cars: Only cars with even-numbered license plates could circulate today, tomorrow only odd numbers can circulate. And public [...]

A perfect place to begin

Sunday afternoon in Montreuil, overcast sky. Unlike this morning, when there was a brilliant sun illuminating the Place Jean Jaurès, which was filled with people buying bread, groceries, flowers, the Sunday papers, visiting the Christmas market in the chill. I was again struck by how different this neighborhood has become since I moved here 20 [...]

The day after: Yes we (still) can

So very difficult to know what to say today and how. And yet I know, like it says in the title of a Japanese Zen master's book: You have to say something. So I will say something, and it's quite simple: Today, my outrage and that of millions and millions of other Americans is unfathomable. As [...]

Our opening night last week still seems like a dream. It was a perfect evening, from the dedication ceremony to Norman Fischer's great talk and discussion with participants to the festive party and cleanup that followed. I am particularly grateful to my teacher, Roshi Catherine Genno Pagès, for her presence and for her tireless devotion [...]

(voir texte en français ci-dessous) Since our founding in 2004, we at the Wild Flower Zen Sangha have pursued our mission — to foster liberation for everyone everywhere — without having a fixed “home of our own.” Now we are venturing into an exciting new wilderness, seeking to grow beyond [...]

That’s life

A minor disruption in my quiet Sunday night: I had just finished writing something to post here about the end of our retreat when somehow it all got wiped out. Gone forever. Like the retreat... Now what? At the end of a retreat I attended some years ago, an anxious participant asked my teacher's teacher what [...]

Heart of Life/Coeur de la vie: Day V

Not much time to post this morning between sitting and moving on into the rest of the day. Some days are like that... Magnificent sun in Paris this morning. Nothing can resist the light, the warmth that it offers. And what can each of us offer? Everything! In Zen, we seek to prepare and offer [...]

Heart of Life/Coeur de la vie: Day/Jour IV

Early morning in Paris, only a moment before heading off to work. Worked yesterday, too, so my sitting was brief, brief but whole, nothing outside of it for those few minutes. What lies ahead today? Open your beginner's mind and you will be showered with the marvels all around. Our question today is: What is [...]
