Suddenly Monday already, and yet another holiday here in France.
The day began with a surprise when I flipped the switch for the light in the bathroom: suddenly no electricity. Whatever I might have been expecting at that moment, it was definitely not that.
All the potential explanations that I could think of for the absence of current quickly proved to be false. The mystery prevailed for several minutes, during which time I began envisioning the day ahead, what I would do about the problem, what I could and could not do without electricity, then lining up backup plans to replace the plans I had made but that were now impossible…
When I opened the shutters, though, there was a man from the electric company in the street. He explained the outage (a broken cable; it affected the whole street, not just me) and assured me they were doing all they could to remedy it swiftly.
I boiled water for tea on the (gas) stove and prepared a light breakfast, still projecting ahead to a day without Internet, laundry, a Skype appointment, lights, the food in the freezer would certainly have to be pitched…
And then suddenly the machines all came to life — radio, refrigerator, computer, lights…
Suddenly, the current flowed. And suddenly all the projecting and alternate plans were swiftly « gone. »
Surprise, surprise, surprise: Suddenly, we just suddenly never know.
