Racing the sky

It’s a brilliant afternoon, spring oozing in every direction as the cat pursues a fat fly buzzing around and around the room. When the insect stops, the cat stops. She waits. The fly crawls along the wall, then zips away, with the cat in fast pursuit. When the fly dips, the cat leaps, nearly catching it with a swift swipe of her paw. But then the fly is gone again.
The cat reminds me of me, racing after what eludes me.
And yet when the sky is clear, like today, the sun simply appears.

For some time now I do not drink any alcohol.
Making several Buddhist vows in the past against using “intoxicants” never stopped me from enjoying my beer or wine, but now – no longer a Buddhist at all – I stopped drinking out of the blue.

I don’t miss it. Life takes care of me.
Last evening I got drunk from watching the majestic birch shining in golden sunlight as I sat in the garden.
Today I got high from listening to the wind blowing around the garden house.
Tomorrow morning – the weather forecast tells me – I will walk in the rain to the train station.

What more could I wish for?
